Language proficiency
You will need to have a proficient level of understanding of either French or English, to be able to follow course lectures and reading assignments. Language requirements are set by each institution. Some post-secondary institutions might ask you to take a language test such as TOEFL or IELTS, but Canadian universities often have their own tests for students. They may charge a fee for the tests, which you will have to pay yourself. Your local Canadian Education Center (CEC) or the admissions staff at the universities can provide information on English examination tests acceptable to Canadian universities. CEC staff can also advise students on whether they may be exempted from taking an English examination.
On the other hand if you are interested in studying at a French language institution, there are no standardized French language tests that international students are required to pass in order to qualify for a admission. French-Canadian universities, however, will determine the level of a student's French language skills on a case-by-case basis, and may choose to administer their own written tests if language skills are in question.
Entrance exams
There is no national Canadian entrance exam. The only exam requirement for admissions is an English language exam for those whose mother tongue is not English.
Inscription fees and conditions
Every university sets its own requirements and conditions for admissions. They generally include the following requirements:
- official school transcripts
- copies of previously attained diploma(s) equivalent to Canadian education hierarchy system
- letters of recommendation (one from the Head of School and one from the Head of the Department)
- proof of financial capabilities to pay tuition and live in Canada
- a completed application returned to the university, some universities may require more information
It is recommended that you apply as soon as possible, and up to 6 months before the deadline because spaces are limited. Some institutions accept students up until the programs or courses are full. You also need to allow time to apply for and receive your Letter of Acceptance, Student Authorization and other documentation that you will need to process a student visa. Diploma equivalence
Canadian Information Center for International Credentials (CICIC) advises individuals on what they need to do to have their credentials assessed and recognized in Canada . They also supply information to students about the appropriate institutions and organizations that can give specific assistance. CICIC itself does not grant equivalencies or assess credentials, nor does it intervene on behalf of applicants or participate in appeals. Only the college or university, or for professional qualifications, the appropriate licensing body, may recognize overseas programs or degrees.
In some provinces, credential evaluation services have been established to provide expert opinion regarding the value of foreign credentials, which are mainly for general employment purposes. Although these evaluations are not binding, they do provide a useful comparison with the credentials obtained in a Canadian province.
Accreditation Associations
The Canadian Information Center for International Credentials (CICIC) was established in 1990, after Canada ratified the UNESCO Convention on the Recognition of Studies, Diplomas and Degrees concerning Higher Education in European states, to assist Canada in carrying out its obligations under the terms of the convention. The convention's purpose is to promote international mobility by advocating wider recognition of higher education and professional qualifications.
